On chilly winter days, I love to cozy up with a hot beverage. However, I am trying to be good and cut down on my sugar and caffeine intake since I tend to have chronic inflammation. So I have been doing some research online to find some good alternatives and I think I just hit the jackpot!

Today I am bringing you my review of the Organic Golden Milk Super Blend from Sunfood. I have been hearing and reading a lot about turmeric over the past year or so and I tried a couple of products like some turmeric gummy bears and I tried putting the fresh root in a smoothie, but to be totally honest they tasted terrible. For some reason certain products containing this very beneficial spice taste… well, like dirt. So when I came across this blend from Sunfood I was a little hesitant about trying it at first…

What is Golden Milk?

It is an extremely beneficial traditional Ayurvedic drink sometimes called turmeric milk or turmeric tea made with hot milk, turmeric root, ginger, cinnamon and other spices. It has been used as a common remedy for –

  • cough
  • colds
  • respiratory infections and other issues.
  • to reduce inflammation
  • promote relaxation
  • improve sleep

All of that sounds great, right? After learning about this and knowing that I personally could really use some help with the last three things on that list I decided to give the blend from Sunfood a chance. I love their products and they usually come through for me so I figured there wasn’t much to lose. At the very least I wouldn’t like it. Before I get into detail about what my thoughts are and how this product worked for me let’s take a look at what’s in it.

The Ingredients

First of all, I am extremely impressed with the quality of ingredients in this product. They are all 100% certified organic and non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, and kosher.

Turmeric Root –

This bright yellow-orange cousin of the ginger plant contains the powerful compound curcumin that helps to balance and normalize inflammation in the body. It also helps with joint strength and mobility, perfect for athletes or people with joint problems. High in antioxidants that fight free radical damage, it is very protective and further helps to boost the immune system.

Black Pepper –

This common table spice helps to activate the curcumin and increases its bioavailability so your body better absorbs all of its wonderful healing properties. Plus pepper is nice and spicy.

Ginger Root –

Commonly used to help relieve nausea and other digestive complaints this warming medicinal root also helps balance inflammation in the body, balance blood sugar levels, boosts the immune system and contains antioxidants gingerol that promotes healthy cell growth.

Maca Root – 

This adaptogenic herb helps to balance hormones and relieve stress in the body. It is rich in the minerals calcium and magnesium, which contribute to bone health and immunity and helps increase energy, endurance, and stamina.

Goji Berry –

These pretty little red berries from Asia are very rich in antioxidants which may provide a boost to the immune system. They contain vitamin A, selenium, vitamin C, and potassium. Sunfood uses the whole fruit powder that has a very pleasant sweet and slightly tangy taste.

Boswellia –

Also known as Frankincense, helps balance inflammation, support joint health, and promote optimal mobility, loosen and relax stiff joints, increasing mobility and range of motion, and supports healthy lung function.

Cinnamon –

Another common but extremely beneficial spice. Not only is it used for its wonderful flavor it is rich in antioxidants that aid in normalizing inflammation, helps supports the heart, brain, and blood sugar levels. Cinnamon may also help with maintaining optimal cholesterol levels. Good thing this is used so much during the holidays! 🙂

Cardamom –

A common ingredient in spiced cookies and cakes. These sweet-spicy tasting green pods help the body naturally detoxify, supports optimal digestion, and provides a delicious flavor. It’s also known to uplift and support a positive mood and to help maintain healthy teeth and gums. Who knew?

Stevia –

This is a safe natural alternative to sugar that actually comes from a little green plant or rather its leaves. A pinch of organic stevia adds a sugar-free sweetness that won’t spike blood sugar. Yay!

My Thoughts

I made this with full-fat coconut milk as recommend on the package. The fat helps with absorption so don’t cut corners when making this. You can use whole cows milk or goat’s milk if you prefer. I used the Native Forest Organic Coconut Milk because I need to avoid dairy for health reason and this one comes in a BPA-free can.

To Make it –

  • I just put a cup of the milk in a small saucepan and warmed it up over medium heat
  • transferred it to a tea mug
  • then stirred in one teaspoon of the Organic Golden Milk Super Blend. It blended up really easily.

Like I said earlier I was a little hesitant to try this due to past experience but WOW does this taste amazing!! It is warming and spicy and sweet but not too sweet. All of the flavors are perfectly balanced with no earthy aftertaste whatsoever. I try to drink a cup every night now before bed because I feel like it really helps me wind down and have a better sleep. I tend to get insomnia due to the chronic inflammation – having PCOS is so much fun – so falling asleep usually takes me forever but this is making it much easier and I feel like my quality of sleep has improved. I really believe that over time my health will continue to improve the more I consume this liquid gold.

This can also be enjoyed cold if hot drinks are not your thing or during the summer time. You can also try adding a teaspoon or two of raw cocoa powder to make a nice hot spiced cocoa drink. No added sugar needed.  Like I said this stuff is amazing! So I do hope some of you will decide to give it a try. 🙂
