Have you ever thought that getting truly clean, clear, glowing skin is something only other people get to experience? With all of the ads in beauty magazines and even here on the internet, having great skin seems like a myth.
Yes, we do need really good skin care products, but the eternal pursuit of perfect beauty seems a little unreal after a while. My personal experience has been that most of us have much better skin than we realize. With that said, the real secret to perfect skin is keeping it clean and balanced. This is why I am now a fan of Oil Cleansing.

History of Oil Cleansing
Oil Cleansing also referred to as the Oil Cleansing Method or just OCM has been around since ancient times. Before the advent of soap (the kind used for bathing) in the early 19th-century cleansing, the skin with oils was common practice. Cleopatra used them and so did the Romans. However, it has just recently made a comeback. The reason being that for the past 2 or 3 decades putting oil on your face was considered a major faux pas.

Unless you have dry skin adding oil to your daily routine probably does sound crazy. I remember as a zitty teenager in the 90’s being bombarded with marketing ads and articles stating that oil was this evil thing that needed to be exorcised from my skin and skin care routine. In order to achieve this goal of drying out my skin as much as possible, I washed with harsh soaps, medicated toners, and used ineffective oil-free face creams. My skin was left flaky, irritated and looking worse than ever.
Then I landed my first real job working at a day spa. My boss, being the awesome lady she is quickly taught me the correct way to care for my skin, low and behold it began to clear up. I stopped washing my face with harsh soaps, medicated products, etc. The thing is you can have any skin type, dry, oily, combo, and still experience breakouts.
Truth be told, acne is usually caused by hormonal imbalances, food allergies, and dirty chemical-laden cosmetics and skin care. Drying out your skin more often than not leads to more breakouts. Flaky skin clogs pores. The trick is to get your skin really clean without stripping it of its natural oils.
Your regular cleanser may be doing a good job, but chances are it is not removing all of your makeup or the dirt and bacteria that gets into your pores throughout the day. This can lead to blackheads, pimples, and enlarged pores. This is where the OCM comes into play. It is also a very affordable method for cleansing.
How Does OCM Work?
The science behind this cleansing method is that oil dissolves oil. It is this best makeup remover as it can reach deep into your pores to thoroughly remove any dirt and debris better than regular facial cleansers. But there is a proper way to do it. You can’t just smear it on your face and expect miraculous results. You have to know which oil or oils to use for your skin type, how to apply them and how to remove it.

How To Choose The Right Oils
Not all oils are created equal and they certainly don’t work for everyone. I don’t do well with coconut oil, but other women swear by it. Let’s explore the options.
First, you want to make sure that the oils you choose are organic and cold pressed. You don’t want to be rubbing pesticide residues on your face and heat or solvent extracted oils lose their nutrients during the extraction process and may be rancid.
All Skin Types
Sweet Almond Oil – A nice light oil that comes from the same nut that we eat. It is good for all skin types and can be used alone or in combination with other oils. Rich in vitamin E, monounsaturated fatty acids, proteins, and other key nutrients. Avoid if you have a nut allergy.
Grapeseed Oil – A light oil that easily penetrates the skin. Good on its own or mixed with almond, olive or jojoba oil. High in antioxidants and noncomedogenic.
Jojoba Oil – This is actually not an oil, but a liquid wax from the Jojoba plant that is native to the deserts of the southwest and Mexico. It is almost identical in composition to the sebum our skin produces. Good for all skin types and especially beneficial for acne-prone skin and a great choice if you have a nut allergy.
Normal to Dry/Mature
Extra Virgin Olive Oil – Not just for salads. Considered liquid gold by the Grecian’s. This oil from the fruit of the olive tree has been used for skin care in the Mediterranean for centuries. It contains vitamin E, polyphenols, and phytosterols, and does not clog pores.
Coconut Oil – Once demonized only to later become a miracle oil in more recent times. This tropical fruit oil seems to be able to do it all. Naturally anti-bacterial and antifungal with a long shelf life. Use alone or mixed, but avoid if you have a severe nut allergy. Good for all skin types.
Rosehip Seed Oil – This precious oil was used by the Egyptians and Native American Indians for its healing properties. It comes from the fruit of the wild rose before it blossoms. Extremely high in antioxidants and other key nutrients making it an excellent choice for dry and mature skin types.
Avocado Seed Oil – This highly moisturizing oil is excellent for treating eczema and psoriasis. Chock full of essential fatty acids, like omega-3. This is another great choice for dry or mature skin.
Sesame Seed Oil – Yes this is the same oil used in cooking. Another oil that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic herbal skin care. The sesame plant is native to Africa and parts of India. Anti-bacterial and high in vitamin E. Excellent for ridding the skin of blemishes.
Castor Seed Oil – Extracted from the Castor Bean. A thick and almost sticky oil that is great for oily and acne-prone skin. It possesses drawing properties and is great for detoxing the skin. Should be mixed with other oils.
There are many others I could mention but the above are the most common.
DIY OCM Recipes
These are just suggestions of recipes you can concoct yourself. Feel free to play around and come up with your own formulations. Everyone’s skin is different so use whatever works for you personally. A printable version of a basic recipe for all skin types available at the bottom of this post.
Sensitive Skin or Rosacea –
Plain Almond, Olive, Jojoba or Grapeseed oil.
Dry Skin –
Straight Almond, Olive, Coconut or Sesame Seed Oil or –
5-10% Castor Oil
30% Rosehip Seed Oil
60% Avocado or Olive Oil
Mature Skin –
10% Castor Oil
10% Avocado Seed Oil
40% Olive Oil
40% Rosehip Seed Oil
Normal Skin –
Straight Coconut, Grapeseed, Almond or Jojoba oil or –
20% Castor Oil
80% Almond, Grapeseed or Jojoba oil
Oily/Acne Prone Skin –
20% Castor Oil
40% Jojoba or Sesame Seed Oil
40% Grapeseed Oil
Pour into glass bottles (amber or cobalt are best to keep oils fresh. Sunlight can cause oxidation) with an airtight lid. I prefer a lid with a glass dropper. It is less messy as I can dispense the exact amount I need. If combining different oils like in the above recipes simply pour into the bottle and shake well to mix. store in your medicine cabinet between uses.
How To Cleanse Your Skin
Proper oil cleansing involves massaging and steaming your skin with a damp washcloth.
- Massage several drops of oil in circular motions over entire face for at least two minutes. Use enough to really cover your whole face including your eye area.
- Dampen a clean washcloth with hot water (use warm water if you have sensitive skin). Lay it over your face for several minutes. This will steam open your pores, allowing the oil to penetrate deep into your pores and assist in removing all traces of makeup and dirt.
- Rinse washcloth and repeat the above step 2-3 times.
- Rinse cloth again and gently wipe your skin. This step will remove any remaining oil and provide light exfoliation.
- Rinse skin with cool water and follow with a good toner to close pores.
Tips & Tricks
Mix equal parts oil with brown sugar or finely ground sea salt to make a gentle facial scrub or follow cleansing with a detoxing clay mask. You can also double cleanse your skin with a mild facial cleanser or olive oil based soap. I love the Pure Olive Oil Soap from Kiss My Face.

- 3.5 ounces Cold Pressed Grape Seed Oil Organic
